How to record your webcam on a Mac

Open QuickTime Player and choose File → New Movie Recording. Select your camera and microphone, press Record, then save the movie. If you want your face over a screen recording, plan a separate screen-and-camera workflow.

This method works for a short talking-head clip, a camera test, or a separate face-cam track for a tutorial. It uses software already on your Mac.

Record a webcam movie in QuickTime

Apple documents the New Movie Recording workflow and its camera, microphone, and quality choices.

  1. Open QuickTime Player from Applications or Spotlight and choose File → New Movie Recording.
  2. Use the menu beside the recording controls to choose the camera you want. MacBook and iMac models may have a built-in camera; Mac mini and Mac Studio need a compatible external camera.
  3. Choose the microphone you want to capture. A headset can help prevent room echo.
  4. Check the camera framing and make a short test. Press Record, speak for a few seconds, then stop.
  5. Choose File → Save, name the movie, and play it back to confirm the camera and voice are present.

What about the screen and webcam together?

QuickTime offers separate screen recording and movie recording commands. It does not automatically package those as a finished picture-in-picture tutorial. You can capture the two sources separately and edit them together, or use a recorder that supports screen-and-camera composition.

For a clean presentation, keep the camera bubble away from important controls, choose a stable size and corner, and test whether your narration is synchronized with the screen before recording a long walkthrough. Mac Screen Recorder plans a camera-overlay workflow, but its Mac download is not available yet.

If the camera or microphone does not appear

The Camera and Microphone permission lists are separate. Apple explains how to manage each one.

  1. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and allow the app if it has requested access.
  2. Check Privacy & Security → Microphone separately if the video has no voice.
  3. Quit other apps that may be using the camera, then reopen QuickTime and select the device again.
  4. For an external camera, confirm that it is connected and selected; test it in another camera app if needed.

Keep the webcam recording clear

Higher capture quality can create much larger files. If you need to send the movie, estimate the export size before choosing an unnecessarily high bitrate.

  • Face a window or soft light instead of sitting with a bright window behind you.
  • Put the camera near eye level and leave a little space around your head for later cropping.
  • Use headphones when recording narration around speakers.
  • Record ten seconds and check both picture and sound before a full take.

Common questions

Can QuickTime record my webcam on a Mac?

Yes. In QuickTime Player, choose File → New Movie Recording, select a camera and microphone, then record and save the movie.

Can I record the webcam and screen together with QuickTime?

QuickTime has separate movie and screen recording commands. It does not create a finished picture-in-picture screen-and-camera video in one built-in step; use a recorder with that feature or combine the recordings in an editor.

What if my Mac does not have a built-in camera?

Connect a compatible external camera, select it from QuickTime’s camera menu, and make a short test recording. Mac mini and Mac Studio need an external camera for this workflow.
